Students in UK schools who speak a language other than English as their first language are referred to as EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners. They are typically immersed in an English-speaking atmosphere. They are required to learn the English language while also learning curriculum subjects alongside, which can be exceedingly challenging for the learner, teachers and the school.
The quicker an EAL pupil learns English and goes into mainstream schooling, the less they fall behind academically. Quickly adopting the English language also improves the pupil’s well-being as they begin to make friends, join clubs and interact better with other students and the wider community.
Learning English using EAL (English as a second language) resources by EMAS UK scaffolds their academic learning whilst they learn the English Language. With proper adoption and implementation, schools have proven to accelerate students’ progress by up to a school year.

“Your resource has been a brilliant support for our school.”
“We are able to assess pupils on arrival in their own language; we track pupil progress closely, and the evidence is that non-English speakers supported by the EMAS methodology generally make the progression in about three to four months that otherwise, we would expect them to make in about a year”
Hi Debbie.
I would just like to add that your product is absolutely fantastic. I use it on a daily basis to help my new EAL pupils in their transition period and to support teachers in lessons with key vocabulary and ideas. This really allows the pupils to feel included in the lesson and gives them a solid foundation on which they are able to build their understanding and knowledge within each subject area. A real asset to learning and I wouldn’t be without it!
Kind regards
Rebecca
